Learn how to consciously dress to impress! Actress and Stylist Sami Nye give us 5 tips on how to build a capsule wardrobe.

Tell us a little bit about you and what is your personal definition of style.

Hi everyone! My name is Sami and I’ve been a personal stylist since 2017. I’ve always loved fashion and trying new trends so when I got the opportunity to style other people for a job, it seemed like a no-brainer! To me, personal style is an extension of you, how you feel about yourself, and how you feel about the world. You can tell so much about a person by the way they dress. Your personal style is a physical, external manifestation of who you are; whether it be bold, colorful, and bohemian, or more simple, chic, and classic, it is a great way to express yourself beyond words.

Tell us how you got into fashion and more specifically styling.

I have always loved fashion- as I kid I loved to play dress up and wear pretty clothes. I grew up performing and doing theatre and the first time you got to try on your costume was always so special- it was the first time you truly felt transformed- like you had become that character. It was always one of my favorite parts of the theatre process. I am also an actress and performer, so when I graduated college and started auditioning, I needed a job that would allow for flexibility to go on auditions, perform in shows, etc. and I desperately wanted to avoid waitressing or bartending based on some not-so-fun stories I had heard from my friends. A friend of a friend worked as a personal stylist, and once I learned more about the position, I thought it would be a perfect job for me!

What are your top 5 tips to building a capsule wardrobe?

Well, I think first everyone needs to have some good quality staples in their wardrobe: a great pair of quality jeans that make you feel like a million bucks, a little black dress, a nice jacket that you can wear for almost any occasion, and some amazing shoes that are well-made and versatile. It doesn’t matter if they are boots, heels, ballet flats, or sneakers- whatever you will wear most and get the most use out of. Sometimes I think capsule wardrobes are tricky because they tend to be very classic, which is great, but it does not match everyone’s style. I think you need to determine what matches your personal style, and then go from there. Are you a boho-chic gal? Then a great maxi skirt or dress is a must-have for you. Are you more edgy? Then black jeans should be a staple in your closet. For all my clients who say they want a capsule wardrobe, I always recommend those high-quality staples that are in line with their personal style first and then we can fill-in from there- adding cute tops and shoes and trendier pieces that will flush out the wardrobe!

Our motto is to LIVE VIBRANT and SHINE BRIGHT! How do you relate and embrace this motto?

First of all, I think that is a brilliant motto! One of my favorite parts of being a personal stylist is that I get to help people and allow them to feel their best. You know the feeling when you put on a great outfit and it makes you feel amazing? You walk taller with a little bounce in your step, you smile, look people in the eye, and show up for yourself and the others around you? That is the power of a great wardrobe! It really is not so much about how you look in your clothes but how those clothes make you feel- and that could be so different for different individuals. You want to choose clothing that makes you feel like the best version of yourself because you care about yourself and you love yourself! I always say- When I look my best, I feel my best, and when I feel my best, I can do anything! So, put something on that makes you feel amazing and SHINE BRIGHT, my friends!
